Coollisteige Castle (in Ruins) — Report the wrong picture

Coollisteige Castle stands in ruins across County Clare, its stones scattered rather than stacked into a recognizable tower. The loss of shape suggests violence or neglect, but the exact cause has faded from memory. What remains is a flat wound in the land where a building once forced the sky into rooms.

Coollisteige Castle was built in the late 16th or early 17th century by a member of the local Ó Briain (O'Brien) family, who were prominent Gaelic lords in the region. It is remembered as an example of a defensive tower house constructed during a period of political instability in the west of Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
