Colchester Castle was built in the late 11th or early 12th century by the Normans, likely under the orders of William the Conqueror or his successors, to consolidate control over the eastern part of England. It is important as one of the earliest Norman castles in England and as a symbol of the Norman conquest's impact on British fortification and governance.
