Castle Park in Colchester divides into upper and lower sections along a Roman wall, forcing visitors to cross from ancient boundary into modern leisure without warning. Colchester Castle rises above the wall as a Norman keep built on Roman temple foundations, while Hollytrees Museum occupies an 18th century mansion nearby. The bandstand, gardens, café and play area fill the rest of the park, making history and everyday recreation share one breath.
