What is recorded here
Stump and scaffold, the castle still breathed in 1654 when John Stapleton's name sat above it. Whether Clonismullen House rose on that same footprint or beside it, the land kept shaping itself around a building that would not fully die. Farm sheds occupy the memory now, their roofs lining the horizon where stone once stood.
The precise location of this castle within the townland of Clonismullen has not been identified. It has been suggested that Clonismullen House indicated on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map was built on the site of the medieval castle (SMR File). Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'stumpe of a castle inhabited yett wanting repaire' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 60). John Stapleton listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). No visible remains at ground level. Modern farm sheds are located in the area. No firm evidence to suggest that Clonismullen House was built on site of medieval castle.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Clonismullen House, first mapped in 1838, was likely built on the site of a medieval structure, though the original builder and date remain unclear. Its importance lies in its possible connection to earlier historic remains within the townland.
