Standing stone

What is recorded here

Clogh-na-imerish is a rectangular standing stone in County Cork, Ireland, where local story claims Mahon, brother of Brian Boru, lost his life. The field still carries the name Parc-an-imerish, keeping the brother's memory alive long after the stone stopped being new.
Not marked on 1842 OS 6-inch map. In N portion of field named 'Parc-an-imerish' on 1905 and 1935 OS 6-inch maps. Stone stands c. 15m to S of field fence which defines Cork-Limerick county border. Stone (H 1.05m; 0.82m x 0.54m) is rectangular in plan, long axis NE-SW. According to local information, Brian Boru's brother, Mahon was killed in this field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the stone may have served as a territorial marker or ritual site. The name "Clogh-na-imerish" (stone of the heifers) suggests a possible agricultural or pastoral association, though specific folklore is not recorded.
