Cist in Newtownbalregan

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Polygonal cist (L 0.9m E-W, Wth 0.7m N-S) situated on top of a small knoll overlooked by higher ground to NE and SE; discovered during ploughing in 1984. Side slabs up to a height of 0.4m, with corbelled drystone walling above this up to a height of 0.75m. Originally covered by several small slabs, with traces of slabs also forming a floor. The cist contained unburnt human bones and fragments of a possible Bowl Food Vessel. (CLAJ 1987, 274-8)
