Cist in Ballybrew

Three cists found during gravel quarrying. One contained a crouched inhumation with a bowl, broken lignite bead, flint scraper, two flint flakes and possible remains of a rush mat. A second produced a crouched inhumation with a bowl and three flint chips as well as a cremation. The third cist was filled with earth. Early Bronze Age cist burial; associated with funerary goods indicating a ritualised inhumation practice. The presence of a rush mat and personal ornaments suggests social or ceremonial significance.
