Cist

In private burial ground of Anne's Grove (CO026-058---). Four tumuli (CO026-140---, 141---, 142---, 143---) in field to S. Rectangular cist (0.95m x 0.65m) defined by limestone slabs to E, N and W (S slab missing), supporting large capstone (1.92m x 1.62m); set within large irregularly shaped cairn (Doody 1986, Cork No. 2; Waddell 1990, 58). Cairn material around cist and on E side, dug away; no record of finds from cist. According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 1, 66), cist lay within 'prehistoric burial ground'. Rectangular cist, likely dating to the Early Christian or medieval period. Its location within a private burial ground suggests it may be associated with local or family burials of historical significance.
