Church

What is recorded here

West Cork church ruins hold a small rectangular shadow beside the graveyard. The remaining walls rise barely high enough for a child to touch, yet they still mark the parish of Garranekinnefeake. Overgrowth has swallowed most of the building, leaving only a ghost of its shape in the earth.
In W side of graveyard (CO088-00701-), overgrown remains of rectangular church (c. 10m E-W; c. 5m N-S). Internal height of N, E and W walls c. 1m; only W has noticeable external height (c. 0.8m); no trace of E wall. Parish church of Garranekinnefeake (Power 1940, 100-2). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
