Church in Whitechurch

Remains of church, in N half of graveyard, to E of Whitechurch. According to Brady (1863, vol. 2, 406) 'built in 1774 and rebuilt in 1801' on site of earlier church in ruins in 1615 (ibid., 404). Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as T-shaped structure and on 1904 OS 6-inch map as rectangular structure (long axis E-W), in ruins. Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 712) notes 'a square tower surmounted by a low spire'. Section of walling (H 0.7m) survives running E-W for 15.4m with short return running N-S for 6.2m, possibly remains of N arm of church. Rectangular graveyard; inscribed headstones date from early 19th century, many within area of church. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
