What is recorded here
The present Gothic style church (1824) occupies the site of the earlier parish church of St. Paul's founded in 1697, which occupied an even earlier church site demolished in 1504 (Craig 1952, 73, Clarke 2002, 17). The 17th century church was a galleried structure which had become ruinous by 1821 (Wheeler and Craig 1948, 33-4; Bradley & King 1987, 2, 127-128; FMD map 1978, F16).
