Church (in Ruins)

A fortified church whose present remains consist of a substantial tower with a circular turret projecting from the N wall near the NW angle, with the foundations of a nave extending to the W. The tower now consists of high barrel vault with large two-centred windows in the E and S walls. There is a piscina in the S wall and a cupboard opposite it, both at the W end of the church. Access to the upper floor is via a spiral staircase in the turret. There are two small lintelled chambers on either side and within the curtain of the vault. Above this level, the tower does not survive. The walls show signs of repair and rebuilding. Situated on top of slight rise in graveyard. O'Donovan states that the church was known as the Castle of Killelan, and was believed to have belonged to an abbey which originally stood here (OSL 1837, 88). Date of upload: 15 September 2016
