Church in Kilmurrin

Church

What is recorded here

There was a church dedicated to Murina, the sister of St. Baramedan who was the patron of Kilbarrymeaden church (WA025-040001-). Murina's church was close to the sea in Kilmurrin, and traces of the ruin were still evident (Ryland 1824, 271). While a field called Relig is known (Mooney and Kavanagh 1977, 19) the location of the church is not precisely known. Compiled by: Michael Moore. Date of upload: 20th May, 2011.
The church in Kilmurrin was dedicated to St. Murina, sister of St. Baramedan, and dates to the early medieval period, likely between the 7th and 10th centuries. Its location near the sea reflects the common siting of early Christian churches in accessible coastal areas, and it is significant as part of the broader network of monastic and ecclesiastical sites associated with early Irish saints.
