Church in Kilmacullagh

Church

What is recorded here

The Ordnance Survey Letters (1838-40) noted 'In the townland of Killmacullagh in this parish, immediately bounding Newtown Mt. Kennedy, on the east, they show the situation of the old church of Macullagh, very near the Mill' (O'Flanagan 1928, 86). Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 07 February 2013
The church in Kilmacullagh was likely built in the early medieval period, dedicated to Saint Macullagh, and reflects a typical rural Irish ecclesiastical site of that era; its exact builder is unknown, but it may have been founded by a local monastic community. The site is significant as an indicator of early Christian presence in the region.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
