Church in Kilheffernan

References to variations of Kilheffernan, such as 'Keylynyhernagh, Killehyrnagh, Kellirhernagh, Killehehernagh' appear in the Calendar of Ormond Deeds and the Calendar of fiants from 1508 to 1603 (Ó Cearbhaill 2007, 130). According to Power (1907, 299) Kilheffernan translates as “O'Heffernan's Church” but he refers to the fact that 'O'Donovan suggests Cíll Eithearna (“Ehearan's Church.”) The Martyr. Donegal, gives-”Ethern, Bishop of Donaghmore,” under May 27th'. Other than the townland name there is no evidence to suggest there was a church in this townland.
