Church in Ballyheige

Church

What is recorded here

Teampall-Fo-Thoinn, the church under the waves, is the legendary church of Ballyheigue. According to local tradition, this church and burial ground was once an island in Ballyheigue Bay which was submerged by the sea. In severe weather conditions, the waves can be seen breaking into white foam at the supposed place of the church, and local fishermen say that in clear weather the ruins of the church can be seen below the waves. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 946. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013
