Church in Ballycoog Lower

Situated on a gentle NE-facing slope. Rectangular structure (int. dims. 3.85m N-S; c. 8m E-W) defined at the W end by uncoursed rubble; the E end is represented only by part of the wall-base. There is a single window in the W gable with a low arch and another at the W end of the S wall. The door (now blocked) is towards the W end of the N wall. Between it and the W wall is a square niche 1.1m above the floor. There is a strong local tradition of restoration in the 1780s, and red brick was used in the windows. There is no indication of an enclosure or associated graveyard. Marked as 'R.C. Chapel (in Ruins)' on the 1838 OS 6-inch map.
