What is recorded here

Inishbeg Island, County Cork. Childrens Burial Ground. North bank. Ilen estuary. A slight rise in the field. No cross, no stone, no name. Only the shape of the earth remembering weight. Children died young everywhere, but here the land kept their smallness separate. Buried apart. Remembered apart. The tide still moves around the island. The field still holds its rise. What was placed there in haste or love has not been erased.
On N bank of Inishbeg Island in Ilen estuary. Slight rise in field may indicate area of burial ground. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
