What is recorded here
Children's Burial Ground in County Cork, Ireland, appears on the 1842 OS 6-inch map, marking a disused pasture where dry-stone walling still braces a scarp from northeast to south. Low gravemarkers dot the irregular area, waiting beneath grass and rain. The children may have been neighbours, patients or victims of a forgotten fever; their names have not reached us. The stones remain small because the lives were small, and the ground has kept that proportion ever since.
Marked 'Children's Burial Ground' on OS 6-inch map (1842). In pasture. Irregular area defined by scarp, revetted by dry-stone walling NE->S. Many low gravemarkers noted.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
