Childrens Burial Gd.

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Burial Gd. is a square field of small limestone markers in County Galway, Ireland, set close together as if marking little bodies rather than adults. The stones stand or lie in gentle pastureland, unchanged since people stopped naming the dead on them. They suggest a community that buried its youngest separately, perhaps believing children needed their own quiet ground. The closeness of the markers makes the loss feel shared, repeated and deliberately remembered.
In gently undulating pastureland, close to the td. boundary . A roughly square unenclosed area (N-S 11.9m, E-W 10.9m), in fair condition, within which are a number of uninscribed limestone grave-markers, both upright and recumbent, mainly aligned N-S and set c. 0.7m apart.(O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 229; Melvin c. 1971, 11) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
