Milltown children died without baptism and were buried inside the circular church wall, a practice continuing into the twentieth century. The wall still marks the boundary where families placed their lost infants beyond the main graveyard. Gogarty recorded the custom in 1907, preserving a local belief that divine law could be crossed only at the edge of human understanding.

Gogarty (1907, 35) noted that the church (LH022-004001-) 'was once enclosed by a circular wall, whose situation may be clearly seen, and within the space enclosed by it the remains of unbaptised infants have been buried, even within recent years.'
