Children's burial ground in Inis Bearachain

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

An Gleann Thuaidh hides a small circular burial ground seventy-five metres inland, marked only by scattered boulders and a gap in its ruined wall. Local memory assigns the hollow to children and possibly Famine victims, giving the quiet island edge a heavy, tender purpose. The pine tree still grows among the stones, witnessing the forgotten dead beneath its roots.
In an overgrown hollow, known as An Gleann Thuaidh, in N part of the island, and c. 75m from shore. A small circular area with traces of an enclosing wall which has a gap at SE. Many small boulders are visible in the interior as well as a pine tree. Said to have been used for the burial of children and possibly Famine victims (info. T. Robinson). Not visited. (Robinson 1985, 46) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). A possible Neolithic or early Bronze Age cairn or burial enclosure; its significance lies in its potential as a rare example of a children's burial site in a coastal Irish context.
