What is recorded here
Children died young in Gorteenlahard and went into the earth beside an earthwork, marked only by a cross-cut stone now lost to leveling. The ground keeps what the surface forgot: small bodies, sudden grief, and the patience of soil.
Within an earthwork (GA045-022----). According to local tradition, there was a CBG here which contained 'a stone with a cross on it'. The monument was levelled some years ago and no visible surface trace survives.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
