Children's burial ground in Carrowmanagh (dunmore By.)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Children died young in Carrowmanagh and were laid to rest within a marked enclosure, not scattered across open fields. The ground kept its own counsel, accepting small bodies until roughly seven decades ago when the final child was buried there. Neary called it a cemetery in 1914, yet no stone, mound or furrow remains visible above the soil. What is gone from sight has not gone from the place; the earth still holds what the living stopped showing.
Within an enclosure (GA005-033----). Traditionally known as a CBG and referred to by Neary (1914, 117, no. 54) as ' a cemetery'. No visible surface trace survives. According to local information, the last burial took place c. 70 years ago. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
