Children's burial ground in Ballyknockan (talbotstown Lower By.)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

A slight mound (diam. 20m) excavated in 1938 prior to the construction of the Blessington Reservoir beside which it now stands. Two small graveslabs, one in the form of a cross, came from the site, but the excavator surmised the acidic soil had destroyed any bones. Not visible at ground level; the site is still known as the 'Reilig'. (Raftery 1943) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
