Children's burial ground in Ardagh (ballymoe By.)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Fifty metres west of the Ardagh ringfort, a low grassed mound stretches twenty metres long and ten wide, holding children according to local tradition. No markers break the green surface, leaving the dead invisible beneath the grass. The ringfort stands nearby like a silent witness, while the mound waits for footsteps that may never return.
Some 50m W of a ringfort (GA007-002----). According to local tradition, there was a CBG here on a low grassed-over mound (L c. 20m, Wth c. 10m). No grave-markers are visible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
