Cave in Ballynameelagh

Cave

What is recorded here

Adams and colleagues wrote in 1881 that human remains emerged from a Ballynameelagh cave, yet the cave itself has vanished from local memory. The dead may have fallen during storm, work or worship; the hole may have swallowed them and closed its mouth. What is certain is that Ballynameelagh once held a chamber dangerous enough to keep a life inside it.
Human remains were recovered in an investigation of a cave at Ballynameelagh 2 (Adams et al. 1881, 180), but its location is not known. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 11 August, 2011
