What is recorded here

Cut into a limestone quarry-face in County Cork, this is one of four openings in the same rock exposure. Coleman excavated it in 1942 and found a single habitation layer holding iron, bronze, worked bone, worked stone, bird bones, fish shells, charcoal and animal bones. That mix suggests repeated Early Christian use, with keeping livestock, hunting, foraging, cooking or craft activity all sharing the same dark place.
In NW quadrant of ringfort (8314). Hartnett (1939, 58) noted that 'two openings to a Man-made underground passage show at NW and SE, both inside the rampart'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
