Cave

In a cashel (SL018-051002-). Marked as 'Cave' on the 1913 OS 6-inch map. An opening in the inner face of the ruined enclosing wall of the cashel at SW gives access to a Man-made underground passage with walls of drystone construction and lintel roofing. A sketch plan recorded in 1986 (SMR Files) shows that the access hole leads into a chamber which is connected at its E end by a low lintelled creepway to a second chamber. The second chamber has a small stone lined cupboard built into its E wall. Opening from the N wall of the second chamber is another creepway which is blocked but appears to extends to N. At ground level in the cashel interior, just to N of the Man-made underground passage access hole, a linear surface depression is evident extending from the cashel wall into the interior to ENE for c. 7m.
