Causeway in Cool West

In Gogan's account of discovery of the Cnoc na bPoll hoard reference is made to 'evidence of early habitation ... about 400 yards from the find-site' (Gogan 1932, 60). This consisted of 'an ancient stone causey' (ibid.) consisting of 'flags' which 'may extend for about a mile in an easterly direction, patches of the old road being noted at different points' (ibid.). These were found about 12 feet below surface of bog and 'adjoining' a stake paling (LI035-007---). Area of causeway indicated on Grogan's map (ibid., opp. 59) now covered by dense coniferous plantation with deep intersecting drains. No trace of any archaeological features were noted in the area.
