Catholic Church of the Most Holy Rosary

Freestanding Roman Catholic church, built 1850. Projecting gable-fronted sanctuary to east, single-storey flat-roofed porch to south and west, lean-to vestry to north-east. Pitched slate roof, cay ridge tiles, raised gable ridges, stepped pitched stone verge copings, limestone cross finial to east gable, dressed limestone bellcote to west gable, small cross finial to sanctuary gable, stone gable-fronted carved kneelers, tall red brick chimneystack to vestry, corbel eaves course, cast-iron gutters. Squared-and-snecked rubble limestone walling, projecting chamfered plinth, stepped buttresses to nave, clasping buttresses to corners. Pointed-arch window openings, limestone hood mouldings, shoulder stops, chamfered ashlar reveals, flush sills, leaded stained glass windows, tracery windows to chancel and west gable. Tudor-arch opening to porches, square-profile hood moulding, shouldered stops, chamfered ashlar reveals, varnished timber panelled door to west, vertically sheeted to south. Interior with exposed timber rafters, painted plaster walling, gallery to west, carpeted central aisle, timber pews, timber parquet flooring, leaded stained glass windows, window to north nave depicting Doubting Thomas by Michael Healy, 1923. Set within own grounds in elevated site, graveyard to north and east, upright grave markers, rubble stone boundary wall to east, soldier copings, three flights of concrete steps, mild steel handrail.

This fine Roman Catholic church sited on a hill top is a prominent local landmark for the surrounding countryside. The quality stone construction, bellcote and buttresses enhance the composition. It took ten years to construct, and stands as a testament to the faith of the local community. The stained glass window by Michael Healy is of outstanding quality and contributes to the aesthetic appearance of the interior and exterior.
