Castletownsend National School

Detached ten-bay single-storey school, built 1889, with three pitched roof blocks to rear. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Coursed rubble limestone walls with rendered wall to rear, rendered block-and-start quoins, and centrally placed limestone name plaque. Camber-headed openings with timber casement windows having stone sills and rendered block-and-start surrounds. Recent outbuildings to rear. Rubble limestone walls to front (west) and rear .

The expansive and well balanced façade of this late nineteenth century national school is an important feature within the Gurrannes townland. The colour and textural interest created by the rusticated render detail and rubble stone construction makes it an interesting contribution to the roadside.
