Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Belanagare, later called Cashlaun na Drancaddha, stood a little south-east of Ballyhaunis before losing even the memory of its walls. Knox wrote in 1911 that only the site remained, surrendering the castle to grass, forgetting and the green indifference of County Mayo. It is not a ruin anyone points to, but a hole in human knowledge where a building used to be.
This record refers to a castle which Knox (1911, 212) describes as follows: ‘Only the site remains of the castle of Belanagare, now called Cashlaun na Drancaddha, a little south-east of Ballyhaunis..’. The nature and exact location of this castle are unknown. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 30 June 2022

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
