What is recorded here
Castle fragment in Stephenstown, County Limerick, recorded in 1837 but never precisely located. It may be a buried wall, a forgotten yard or a mistaken word in an old dictionary. The absence makes the place harder to dismiss because invention and memory are doing the work of evidence.
The precise location of a castle in the townland of Stephenstown has not been identified. In 1837 the Topographical Dictionary of Ireland recorded that the Parish of Atheneasy contained 'fragments of castles or buildings at Fauntstown [LI048-004----], Gormanstown [LI040-066003-], and Stephenstown' (Lewis 1837, Vol. 1, 89).
