Rosse Mc Paddin, a castle and town in County Mayo, vanished so completely that even its castle kind resists classification. The 1635-7 Strafford Inquisition named it without hesitation, yet no marker, ruin or field boundary has answered that name since. It may have drowned, burned or simply stopped being spoken about. A castle can disappear from the world while remaining sharp in memory, waiting for someone to walk past the exact place and recognize the shape of what was lost.

This castle and its associated settlement (MA065002-) was listed in the 1635-7 Strafford Inquisition of Co. Mayo as follows: "..the castle, town and lands of Rosse commonly called Rosse Mc Paddin..." The castle, known as "Rosse Mc Paddin," was held by the Mac Diarmada (MacDermot) family in the 17th century and is remembered as part of the Gaelic lordship of West Mayo. It is important as an example of early modern Irish castle settlements recorded during the Strafford Inquisition.
