Castle in Orchardstown West, County Tipperary, belongs to Walter Hackett, an Irish papist recorded in the Civil Survey (1654-6). It was a little ruinous castle beside cabbynns when written, but no trace remains at ground level. Orchardstown House stood nearby until fire destroyed it and it was rebuilt in the 1960s. The castle itself has vanished from sight, leaving only the memory of stone, smoke and a name preserved in a survey.

The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to Walter Hackett, Irish papist, as the owner of Ochardstown and states that 'Upon the sd lands stands a little ruinous castle and some cabbynns' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 301). There is no visible trace of this castle at ground level. Orchardstown House, indicated on the 1st and 2nd ed. OS 6-inch maps, was destroyed by fire and completely rebuilt in the 1960s. This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
