What is recorded here
Castle, unclassified in Oldtown, County Kildare, Ireland, is gone from the ground and nearly gone from memory. A seventeenth-century map still marks it at Oldtown Villa, yet no stone remains and the villa's own owners knew no castle story in 1986. It exists only as a line on paper now, a ghost marked but never built into local pride.
According to Tickell (1960, 399), ‘… no stonework is left [at] the castle[s] (also shown on a seventeenth century map) at Oldtown Villa … ‘. He does not cite the specific seventeenth century map, which was presumably an estate map. In 1986, the owners of Oldtown Villa knew of no tradition of a castle site at the location of their house (SMR file). A castle is not shown here on Taylor's Map of County Kildare (1783), or on any edition of the later OS maps. Unlocated castle within the townland of Oldtown.
