Castle, unclassified in Oldkilcullen may never have risen from the Kildare soil. In 1456 parliament ordered a tall peel tower to defend Kilcullen, yet no stones, foundation or exact spot have survived to prove the command became brick and mortar. The request itself is still sharp: a wooden scaffold, crowded workmen, a tower projecting above ordinary rooftops, and men watching the road for danger. Whether it stood or only waited to be built, Kilcullen was already large enough to need guarding.

Associated with the medieval borough of Kilcullen (KD028-049----). According to Bradley et al. (1986 vol. 4, 389), in 1456, parliament ordered that a ‘peel or tower forty feet in height below the entablement, twenty feet in length and sixteen feet in breadth’ be constructed to defend Kilcullen. Its precise location is unknown, nor is it certain that it was ever built. There are also references to two other castles in Kilcullen (KD028-049007- and KD028-049009-).
