Castle vanished before Ballyowen House rose, leaving only a gap where memory should hold. Walter Sall owned Garrane in 1640, and the Civil Survey still called the castle small and old in 1654, yet no stone remains named or certain. The grassland may hide a cellar, a ditch or a forgotten courtyard beneath its tidy surface.

In grassland at base of an E-facing slope of rising ground in upland region with good views from N through E to S, higher ground to W. Castle had been provisionally located to Ballyowen House which is a mid-18th-century six-bay three-storey house over a basement with central breakfront with no evidence of earlier fabric. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'small old castle wanting repaire' and Walter Sall of Garrane is listed as proprietor in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 243).
