Castle, unclassified in Maudlin (fassadinin By., Kilmacar Ed) is a vanished castle in County Kilkenny, Ireland, remembered through Shawn mc Sharoo Purcell and the Maudlin moat. Whether it stood at either enclosure remains unknown, but the moat still marks the ground where human hands built, defended and forgot.
According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 203), 'In a castle at the "Moat of Maudlin," lived, several centuries ago, Shawn mc Sharoo Purcell, a powerful warrior, much famed in local tradition'. O'Kelly (1969, 46-7) writes that, 'Maudlin moat is a well-known landmark once surmounted by a castle of which there is now no trace'. There are two enclosures in Maulin townland, KK010-043001- and KK010-062----, the latter being c. 180m SW of the former, and it is unknown which, if either, of these monuments are the 'Maudlin moat' referred to. As the precise location of this castle is unknown, it is unlocated within the townland.
