What is recorded here
Lismacue is a country house where a castle vanished before the house appeared. Butler owned the land in 1640, the castle was already ruined in 1654, and no trace remains beneath the gardens or fields. The absence is the shape of the place: a room built from what disappeared.
A castle is indicated on the Down Survey map (1655-6) in the vicinity of the present Lismacue House. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) 'Uppon ye three quarters of Lismchugh stands a demolished castle' and Theobald Butler is listed as the proprietor in 1640 (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 18-19). Lismacue House is a two-storey over basement 18th-century country house with early 19th-century additions. There is no indication that the castle was incorporated into this house. The castle is unlocated within the townland.
