Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Knocknacurra lost its small castle before memory faded, leaving Hales's farm to occupy the exact spot without knowing it. The building vanished so completely that even the landowner cannot point to the ground where it stood. What remained is a hole in the landscape, a absence so total it becomes a shape of its own.
In 1942 it was recorded that there was formerly a small castle on Hales's farm in this townland (ITA). The present landowner does not know the location of such a castle and there is no trace of it on the ground. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
