Kilglass Castle vanished before human memory, leaving only a castle-shaped hole in the story. In 1585 Edmond O'Dowd held three quarters as a demaine to his castle of Kylgalsse, yet no wall or tower remains for that claim. The name itself still casts a shadow across County Sligo, pointing to a building that may have never stood where later people imagined it.

Listed in the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) and classified 'Castle' in both. Its inclusion in the SMR is based on documentary evidence. Wood-Martin, (1882, 316) recorded a 1585 land grant thus: 'In the Barony of Tirrereagh, that Edmond O'Dowd shall have 3 qrs as a demaine to his castle of Kylgalsse free ...'. The compilers of the SMR assumed that the castle was located at the 18th century 'Kilglass House'. However there are no upstanding remains of the castle visible at this location.
