Kilcroney Castle is called a castle but has never been classified, leaving its true purpose and owner hidden behind a gap in the official record. In 1838 and 1840 its remains were still visible in the south-west of the townland: about twenty-four feet of wall on the east and south sides, four feet high, with a heap of stones and mortar inside and the shadow of a courtyard to the south-west. That much is clear. What the castle guarded, who built it, and why it disappeared from every named list remains unknown.

The Ordnance Survey Letters (1838/40) noted 'The ruins of Kilcroney Castle as it is called, lie in the SW part of the townland of Kilcroney; portions of the old walls remain on the E. and S. sides, about 24 feet [7.3m] long and 4 feet [1.2m] high, within which there is a heap of stones and mortar.
