Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Stonetown Castle vanished from every later map despite appearing plainly on the 1657 Down Survey of Fartullagh barony. The omission suggests deliberate forgetting rather than ordinary decay. Gaybrook Demesne may still hide its stones beneath grass, waiting for someone to stop asking permission and begin looking.
The precise location of Stonetown Castle has not been identified. The castle is depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Fartullagh barony (NLI, MS 723-4). The castle is not depicted on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 11 October 2016
Stonetown Castle was likely built in the 17th century, as evidenced by its appearance on the 1657 Down Survey map. Its absence on later Ordnance Survey maps suggests it may have fallen into disrepair or been abandoned by the early 19th century.
