Edward Fay built a tower house above a Derrynagarragh stream, but the castle still refuses to hand itself over. It appears only as a line on a 1657 map and perhaps a faint swirl in modern photographs, hiding behind ordinary fields while the mill and boundary water remain clearer.

Unlocated castle within the townland of Derrynagarragh which is depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Fore barony (NLI, MS 723-4). A tower house type fortification belonging to Edward Fay an 'Irish papist' is depicted in 'Derenegarash' on the Down Survey map of Faughalstown parish (ibid.). On this map it is shown standing to the S of a stream which marks the parish boundary. A watermill (WM007-120----) is depicted to the N of the castle standing on the S bank of this stream on the Down Survey parish map. The precise location of this castle has not been identified. The SMR suggested that that castle was located in a field (ITM 650134/764914) to the S of Ballyknock House. However there is no evidence to suggest that this location marks the site of Derrynagarragh Castle. Earthworks (WM007-102----) visible on Digital Globe aerial photographs taken November 2011 may be the remains of this medieval castle. Built by Edward Fay, an Irish papist, in the mid-17th century, this tower house is remembered for its depiction on the 1657 Down Survey, reflecting the presence of Gaelic-Irish landholders in the Fore barony during the period of English colonial administration.
