What is recorded here
Castle is an unlocated O'Connor wooden castle in Derrymullin. It may have stood as a small defensive seat for a local branch of the O'Connor kindred, but no surviving structure or exact site is recorded. The absence does not erase the possibility that people lived, argued, feasted and watched the land from timber walls now lost.
Unlocated O'Connor wooden castle within the townland of Derrymullin (Loeber 1988, vol. 2, 92-4).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
