What is recorded here

Thomas oge mc Tibbot Bourck held half the castle and bawn in Creagh when the 1635 Strafford Inquisition named him, yet no stone or ditch remains for that claim. The land may have swallowed the building, or the building may have been smaller than pride wanted recorded. Either way, a castle half-owned and now absent is a strange shape of loss: large enough to divide, gone enough to forget.

This castle, with an associated bawn (MA117-045001-), is listed in the 1635 Strafford Inquisition of Co. Mayo: 'Thomas oge mc Tibbot Bourck -1/4 carton of Creagh,…and 1/2 of the castle and bawn thereon;…' (O' Sullivan 1958, 55). Thomas Óg Mac Tiobóid Buarc held a quarter of the land at Creagh and half of the castle and bawn there in 1635, as recorded in the Strafford Inquisition. The site is significant as an example of early 17th-century landholding and fortification in County Mayo.
