Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle Rag vanished beneath a modern house in Ballingarry, leaving only resident memory and a missing stone anchor. The castle may have stood beside the church, but its exact site has slipped from the land. Forgetting has done more work there than any builder.
The precise location of a medieval castle in the village of Ballingarry that was mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Letters has not been identified. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded the following; 'The inhabitants say there was formerly a castle called Castle Rag, the site of which is now occupied by a modern house in the Village of Ballingarry, immediately adjoining the Protestant Church' (OSL, 66).
