What is recorded here

Castle appears on the Down Survey map of 1655-6 near Clonmoney House, though its exact stones have vanished. It may be a forgotten tower, a broken wall, or a false mark, but the survey insisted it existed. That uncertainty is the shape of the castle now: present in the claim, absent from the ground, and still waiting to be found.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Castle recorded here on Down Survey (1655-6) map. Probably in vicinity of Clonmoney House, however, the exact location of the castle is unknown.
